"In a future world, vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity." Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.
Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of "them." The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked--and given the ultimate choice. Die...or become one of the monsters.
Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.
Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend--a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.
But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what--and who--is worth dying for.

I got this book while I was at BEA for my older sister who loves vampires. It was a birthday present and I got it signed and personalized, but I only recently got around to reading it so I could actually give it to her (1 month after her birthday). I had heard great things about this book and about Julie Kagawa and I was interested to see what made it such a hit.

Having read the book, I totally understand what the hype was all about. I love that this book took you back to the real vampire, the bloodsucking killers that don't sparkle. I think everyone needed to be reminded that vampires are vicious killers.

I really loved how this book was divided into different parts of Allie's life as she changed from human to vampire, and that even though it was a short glimpse, we got to see what Allie's life was like before she turned. I liked seeing how even though she said it was every one for themselves, she still stepped in to save her friends.

I loved that Allie tried to maintain her humanity even after being turned into a vampire, she returned to her old stomping grounds to find out how an old companion was doing, she saved the life of a child. This book was a little slow until she met Jeb and Zeke's group, when she started really having interactions with people other than Kanin.

I loved her interactions with Kanin and I'm excited to see how that will translate into the next book. As a big fan of dystopian books, (which even with the vampires, in my mind it still counts as dystopian) I loved the plague idea behind this book and how it was the most unexpected group that caused the first domino to fall.

This was a great book, and it was fun as well. So if you haven't checked out this first book in  this new series, what are you waiting for!

  1. I began reading this book a while ago, but I was reading it from my laptop when I still didn't have a kindle... this did not really work for me! But now that I have my kindle I need to get started on this again! I must say it definitely did intrigue me from what I had read so far!

Thank you for your review, it has definitely sparked my interest again!
