Nil Blog Tour and Interview!

Today on the blog, I have the lovely author Lynn Matson joining me to so I could interrogate her. Er... I mean interview her about the creation of Nil. My review of Nil is here. If you still have no idea what the heck a Nil is. Here is what you can expect from the book:

On the mysterious island of Nil, the rules are set. You have one year. Exactly 365 days--to escape, or you die.
Seventeen-year-old Charley doesn’t know the rules. She doesn’t even know where she is. The last thing she remembers is blacking out, and when she wakes up, she’s lying naked in an empty rock field.
Lost and alone, Charley finds no sign of other people until she meets Thad, the gorgeous leader of a clan of teenage refugees. Soon Charley learns that leaving the island is harder than she thought . . . and so is falling in love. With Thad’s time running out, Charley realizes that to save their future, Charley must first save him. And on an island rife with dangers, their greatest threat is time.

Interview

1. In the book, a requirement to join the City is that you need to contribute something. What would be your contribution?

Oh my gosh--GREAT question! Probably something involving food. Definitely involving food. I love to eat.:)

2. How long would you last on your own on Nil?

On my own?! Probably not very long! Especially if I was still running around naked…lol Seriously, it would be tough to figure out the rules without help, not to mention how exhausting it would be to hunt for food every day. And run from hyenas. And tigers. And …:)

3. If you could have any ally on Nil fictional, dead, alive or otherwise, who would be your companion?

My first thought was Bear Grylls. I mean, how handy would Bear be as an ally?! But then I realized that he's not a teenager so he'd never make it to Nil. My second thought was Katniss, because she's tough and crazy  good with a bow. But then I thought having someone who already had a handle on Nil would be the best choice. So I'd probably pick Natalie. She's strong, kind, and a tested Nil veteran.

4.Did you draw a sketch of the island? If yes, please share.

I drew a VERY rough sketch of NIL in one of my notebooks that I brainstormed in, but nothing very detailed. I'm not skilled at drawing (in fact I'm TERRIBLE!)--I have no sense of scale. I also drew little mini sketches in the margins of the notebook…more like doodles. But I have a complete aerial view of NIL in my head, which I realize is NO HELP AT ALL. :)

5. What would you miss most about life off the island?

The people I met while on Nil. It would be hard not knowing what happened to the people I left behind on Nil...that's one of the things about NIL that intrigued me as I was writing--how would the teens who survived feel when they got home? How would they deal with the not knowing?

6. What happens at midnight on day 365?

That's one of the big questions, right? I'll leave that one up to the reader. :) And maybe a sequel. :)

About Lynne:

Lynne is a former attorney who thinks writing books for teens is much more fun. :) Her debut novel, NIL, a YA thriller with a SF twist, will be published by Macmillan/Henry Holt on March 4, 2014.

When she's not writing or reading, you'll find her hanging out with her husband and their 4 boys, usually at the beach. Cookies are her kryptonite, especially thin mints.

If you've enjoyed this, please be sure to hop on over to the rest of the blog tour spots to see what types of questions they were asking to to see what they thought of the book.

Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians #1)

Author: Rick Riordan
Goodreads rating: 4.17
Pages: 377
Format: Audiobook
Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school... again. And that's the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he's angered a few of them. Zeus' master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.

Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus' stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.

Landry Park Blog Tour; Guest Post

Today on the blog, we have the blog tour for Landry Park. The Author Bethany Hagen was kind enough to do a Blog Post for me to feature today. If you haven't already checked out Landry Park, you can read the synopses below!

In a fragmented future United States ruled by the lavish gentry, seventeen-year-old Madeline Landry dreams of going to the university. Unfortunately, gentry decorum and her domineering father won't allow that. Madeline must marry, like a good Landry woman, and run the family estate. But her world is turned upside down when she discovers the devastating consequences her lifestyle is having on those less fortunate. As Madeline begins to question everything she has ever learned, she finds herself increasingly drawn to handsome, beguiling David Dana. Soon, rumors of war and rebellion start to spread, and Madeline finds herself and David at the center of it all. Ultimately, she must make a choice between duty - her family and the estate she loves dearly - and desire.

On Dystopian Subgenre

Young adult dystopian has become a wonderfully diverse subgenre, and what’s so amazing about the genre is that each author manages to find a different vision of what societal decline looks like.  Landry Park shares this common theme—a future where freedom and individual value have been radically altered from what they are at present, and where the protagonist is brought to a position of making a choice about their place within the dystopia.
Where Landry Park gets its own flavor is the world.  Landry Park takes place in a future America that’s been fractured by civil war and invasion, and where the ruling class have chosen to lead lives of leisure, patterned after how the wealthy have lived in the past.  So instead of sleek skyscrapers and hovercars, Landry Park is made up of foggy gardens and acres of silk and rows of brightly colored petit fours.   I did this not only for aesthetics, but because I think that all dystopias express an anxiety about the regression of society.  What better way to highlight this anxiety than to pinion the story with markers from the past?  Landed estates?  Primogeniture?  A permanent underclass?  I think the world of Landry Park dramatizes what we are afraid of returning to.
About Bethany:
Bethany Hagen was born and raised in Kansas City, meaning she can tolerate jazz for brief amounts of time and is offended by dry rub barbecue. She grew up reading Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen, and all things King Arthur. When she's not working at the library or running around with her kids and husband, she's writing or thinking about writing. Landry Park is her debut book.

Frozen (Heart of Dread #1)

Author: Melissa de la Cruz and Michael Johnston
Goodreads rating: 3.68
Pages: 336
Format: ARC from BEA13
From New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz and Michael Johnston comes this remarkable first book in a spellbinding new series about the dawn of a new kind of magic.

Welcome to New Vegas, a city once covered in bling, now blanketed in ice. Like much of the destroyed planet, the place knows only one temperature—freezing. But some things never change. The diamond in the ice desert is still a 24-hour hedonistic playground and nothing keeps the crowds away from the casino floors, never mind the rumors about sinister sorcery in its shadows.

At the heart of this city is Natasha Kestal, a young blackjack dealer looking for a way out. Like many, she's heard of a mythical land simply called “the Blue.” They say it’s a paradise, where the sun still shines and the waters are turquoise. More importantly, it’s a place where Nat won’t be persecuted, even if her darkest secret comes to light.

But passage to the Blue is treacherous, if not impossible, and her only shot is to bet on a ragtag crew of mercenaries led by a cocky runner named Ryan Wesson to take her there. Danger and deceit await on every corner, even as Nat and Wes find themselves inexorably drawn to each other. But can true love survive the lies? Fiery hearts collide in this fantastic tale of the evil men do and the awesome power within us all.

Bright Before Sunrise Reverse Blog Tour

For the release of Bright Before Sunrise, Bloomsbury did something very cool, they decided to do a reverse blog tour where the bloggers and authors talk about one night that changed how they see themselves and the world. This was a challenge for me because I had no idea where to start. There was no moment that really changed how I saw the world, only ones that brought me down hard that I'm not really ready to face. Instead I picked a moment with my sister below. Before we get to that you can check out the Bright Before Sunrise Tumbr where authors and bloggers are sharing their moments. You should also take a second and read up about Bright Before Sunrise. I've already read it and loved it!

When Jonah is forced to move from Hamilton to Cross Pointe for the second half of his senior year, "miserable" doesn't even begin to cover it. He feels like the doggy-bag from his mother's first marriage and everything else about her new life—with a new husband, new home and a new baby—is an upgrade. The people at Cross Pointe High School are pretentious and privileged—and worst of all is Brighton Waterford, the embodiment of all things superficial and popular. Jonah’s girlfriend, Carly, is his last tie to what feels real... until she breaks up with him.
For Brighton, every day is a gauntlet of demands and expectations. Since her father died, she’s relied on one coping method: smile big and pretend to be fine. It may have kept her family together, but she has no clue how to handle how she's really feeling. Today is the anniversary of his death and cracks are beginning to show. The last thing she needs is the new kid telling her how much he dislikes her for no reason she can understand. She's determined to change his mind, and when they're stuck together for the night, she finally gets her chance.
Jonah hates her at 3p.m., but how will he feel at 3 a.m.?
One night can change how you see the world. One night can change how you see yourself.

I had the hardest time with this prompt for a few reasons. One of them is that I feel that nothing to big has happened to me. I have lived an easy life and I am thankful for that, but the more I thought about One night that changed my life, the harder it was. I thought through important nights in my life, including prom and important moments in my relationships both romantic and familial.

Then I remembered the night when I was in 5th grade, and I learned something about my life that had been obvious, but not at the same time. At the time, my older sister was living with my parents and I and she was tutoring at a Sylvan Leaning Center. On our way home one night, we stopped by her office and she introduced me to some of her students.

This was not an unusual occurrence either, but as she introduced me to them, she kept introducing me to them as her half sister and this was something that was a new concept to me. She had always been my sister and while I knew we had different dads, this meant that we were only half sisters?

Jennifer and I at BEA13 for her first time.
I know that my sister doesn't think of me as a half sister, but the thought had never really occurred to me until she said it. But even after that unspoken truth came out, it didn’t change anything. My sister was my sister and that wasn’t going to change no matter what any one said or what percentage our blood was the same. She is my sister and nothing will change that. It changed how I looked at the world because there are people that put that sort of weight on their relationships, but family is family.

While that moment was just an announcement of the truth, it didn’t change a thing for me and nothing ever will. If anything, that moment made me want to be more like her because of her truthfulness and how unafraid of life she is. She may read this and be sad because she didn't realize that I hadn't really understood, but I harbor no resentment against her, between us there is nothing but love and hope for a future because know that I'm an adult, we can grow closer that way.

Tin Star Blog Tour Stop and Guest Post

Today I have an extra Special treat on the blog! Cecil Castellucci will be joining us as part of the Tin Star Blog Tour. Tin Star is about a girl abandoned on space station and her struggle to survive. In Tin Star there are so many different types of aliens so I asked Cecil to tell me about her Top Ten Favorites across literature and film.

On their way to start a new life, Tula and her family travel on the Prairie Rose, a colony ship headed to a planet in the outer reaches of the galaxy. All is going well until the ship makes a stop at a remote space station, the Yertina Feray, and the colonist's leader, Brother Blue, beats Tula within an inch of her life. An alien, Heckleck, saves her and teaches her the ways of life on the space station.
When three humans crash land onto the station, Tula's desire for escape becomes irresistible, and her desire for companionship becomes unavoidable. But just as Tula begins to concoct a plan to get off the space station and kill Brother Blue, everything goes awry, and suddenly romance is the farthest thing from her mind.

Interested yet? You can Pre-Order your copy of Tin Star at Barnes & NobleAmazon or your local Indie. (Or really anywhere else you want) Tin Star hits Shelves on February 25!

Top 10 Aliens in Books and Movies

Of course I’ve left out a bunch. And you’ll notice in the movie section I left out Star Wars or Star Trek and anything Superman, but duh. You should totally see/read those! But here are some books and movies that I highly recommend that I don’t get to talk about all that often!

Books:

Alien: Estraven

Book: The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Leguin

When a Terran has to go do some stuff on a cold planet called Winter, he ends up taking a 80 mile trek across a glacier with a native of the planet named Estraven. On this planet there is no gender except for once a month when they get ready to reproduce. It’s a wonderful meditation on gender roles because you have this manly Earth man whose notion of what is feminine and what is masculine totally overturned. Remember, this was published in 1969.

Alien : Elana Book: Enchantress from the Stars
Here, Elana is the alien. She is space scientist on a mission to visit young civilizations, but she cannot be revealed. When she learns of a coming invasion to a medieval like planet, she uses her science and masks it as magic, which is the only thing the natives can understand. The book is retelling of the Fairy Queen. It’s got the best of both worlds, science fiction and fairy magic.

Alien: The Masters/ Tripods by John Christopher

Book: The Tripod Trilogy

This book series was my favorite series when I was a kid. It’s about Earth many years after aliens have taken over the Earth. There are Tripods watching over towns and at 13 children are capped with metal caps that basically control them. All adults are tamed in this way. This is the story of Will Parker who escapes capping and takes down the tripods.

Alien: NewtonBook: The Man Who Fell To Earth by Walter Tevis
Newton is an alien trying to figure out a way to get his people to Earth to escape a drought on his planet. He lands in Kentucky. And eventually gets revealed. It’s a sublime and beautiful story.
Bonus. There is a movie and in it Newton is played by David Bowie.

Alien: The ocean on the planet
Book: Solaris by Stanislew Lem

When humans go to a planet, they don’t realize that the ocean is actually one large alien organism. It tries to communicate with them, but alien / human communication is difficult when the two species are so incredibly different. This is also a beautiful film by Andrei Tarkovsky.and a less beautiful film starring George Clooney.

Bonus Book:

Alien (?): Hooper
First Day on Earth by me! (Cecil Castellucci)
The story is about a boy named Mal who believes he’s been abducted by aliens and starts going to an alien abduction support group. There he meets Hooper who says he’s an alien from outer space who wants to go home. Depending on how you read this novel, Hooper is or isn’t an alien. And I love him.

Movies

Alien: E.T.

Movie: E.T. directed by Steven Spielberg.

This film about the unlikely friendship between a boy and an alien who was left behind always brings me to tears. E.T. is a charming alien. He looks alien and barely can communicate with Eliot until of course they figure it out. This first contact story has the sweetness of trying to help a friend and also the horror of what would likely happen if an alien landed on earth.

Alien: The dude played by Jeff Bridges
Movie: Starman directed by John Carpenter

When an alien comes to Earth after having found the golden record on the Voyager capsule, he discovers that Earth is hostile. His ship damaged, he takes the form of a widowed woman’s husband to try to blend in and get to a landing site to meet a rescue ship. Adventure and romance follow. Also, those evil government types who keep trying to dissect aliens. Why are we so mean?

Alien: Alien
Movie: Alien by Ridley Scott

When the awakened from cryosleep crew from a towing ship that works for a corporation investigates a transmission they find an alien ship and an alien that attaches to one of the guys faces. They break quarantine and go back on the ship. Then all hell breaks loose and Ripley played by Sigourney Weaver kicks some mighty alien ass.

Alien: Sam FranciscoMovie: Alien Nation directed by Graham Baker
In this film, aliens called Newcomers who were slaved and lost are immigrants to Earth and are integrating because they are here to stay. A murder happens and an alien cop and a human cop are partnered up to solve the case. What I like about this movie is that it is a cop movie with an alien and human thrown together. I always love a cop movie where the two cops who don’t get along have to solve a case and of course, learn to love each other.

Alien: Invaders

Movie: Attack the Block directed by Joe Cornish

This movie about a night where aliens invade London and a small band of headed-for-lives-
of -trouble youths take them on is great. The aliens are totally scary. The kids are completely loveable for being the heroes here when they are so much the underdogs in their regular life. It’s really funny, too.

And sitting on the sidelines is no longer an option for Tucker, because tomorrow may never come.

Vengeance Blog Tour Stop- Guest Post by Megan Miranda

Today I have a super special treat today. Today I have Megan Miranda, author of Fracture, Vengeance, and Hysteria. Today we're promoting Vengeance which is the companion to Fracture told instead of the point of view of Decker, Delaney's neighbor who saved her life.

Here's a little about Fracture:

Eleven minutes passed before Delaney Maxwell was pulled from the icy waters of a Maine lake by her best friend Decker Phillips. By then her heart had stopped beating. Her brain had stopped working. She was dead. And yet she somehow defied medical precedent to come back seemingly fine. Everyone wants Delaney to be all right, but she knows she's far from normal. Pulled by strange sensations she can't control or explain, Delaney finds herself drawn to the dying. Is her altered brain now predicting death, or causing it?
Then Delaney meets Troy Varga, who recently emerged from a coma with similar abilities. At first she's reassured to find someone who understands the strangeness of her new existence, but Delaney soon discovers that Troy's motives aren't quite what she thought. Is their gift a miracle, a freak of nature-or something much more frightening?
For fans of best-sellers like Before I Fall and If I Stay, this is a fascinating and heart-rending story about love and friendship and the fine line between life and death.

And here you can learn more about Vengeance:

Falcon Lake wants vengeance. And so, it seems, does someone else... An intense, heart-rending psychological thriller to accompany the chilling and seductive Fracture
When Decker drags his best friend Delaney’s lifeless body out of the frozen lake, he makes a deal: Anyone but her. Everyone but her. The lake releases her. It takes another...
All their friends blame Delaney for Carson’s death. But Decker knows the truth: Delaney is drawn to those who are dying, and she would have tried to help Carson.
Or so Decker believes until a body lies in front of him in a pool of water on his kitchen floor. Until he sees in Delaney’s eyes that she knew this would happen too – and she said nothing. Until he realises it isn’t the lake that is looking for revenge – Delaney is part of someone else’s plan.
This powerful and emotionally charged psychological thriller follows Megan Miranda’s stunning debut Fracture.

Top Ten People Delaney Would Save

Thank you for having me on your blog!

Delaney would try to save…..

10. Superman, because if she can save him, then he can save a ton more. And that seems logical.

9. Einstein. I mean, if anyone can figure out what’s going on with her, it’s him, right?

8. The doctors who didn’t give up on her, despite what they believed, who always hold out hope for the miracle.

7. All the friends who rescued her from the ice, because she wishes life were fair like that.

6. Dylan Thomas. There’s something about some of his poems that speaks to her, that makes her think he could explain something to her, help her understand.

5. Marie Curie, who got dealt a really unfair hand—dying as a result of exposure to her own scientific discoveries. Delaney’s pretty sure karma got that one seriously wrong.

4. Victor Hugo, because she’s got some serious questions about one of his books.

3. The friend she couldn’t, because then none of this would be happening, she’s pretty sure

2. Her family. Because.

1. Decker. For all the reasons.

Thanks so much for stopping by and be sure to check out Fracture and Vengeance if you haven't already done so! Thank you so much for Bloomsbury, the publisher of these wonderful books for having me on this tour!

Do I have your attention yet? No? Well now you absolutely have to check out the synopsis!

SYNOPSIS:
Follows the secretive exploits of four high school juniors - Kitty, Olivia, Margot and Bree - at an exclusive Catholic prep school.
To all outward appearances, the girls barely know each other. At best, they don't move in the same social circles; at worst, they're overtly hostile.
Margot Mejia – academically ranked number two in her class, Margot is a focused overachiever bound for the Ivy League.
Kitty Li – captain of the California state and national champion varsity girls' volleyball team, she's been recruited by a dozen colleges and has dreams of winning an Olympic gold medal.
Olivia Hayes – popular star of the drama program, she's been voted "most eligible bachelorette" two years running in the high school yearbook and has an almost lethal combination of beauty and charm.
Bree Deringer – outcast, misfit and the kind of girl you don't want to meet in a dark alley, the stop sign red-haired punk is a constant thorn in the side of teachers and school administrators alike.
Different goals, different friends, different lives, but the girls share a secret no one would ever guess. They are members of Don't Get Mad, a society specializing in seeking revenge for fellow students who have been silently victimized by their peers. Each girl has her own reason for joining the group, her own set of demons to assuage by evening the score for someone else. And though school administration is desperate to find out who is behind the DGM "events", the girls have managed to keep their secret well hidden.
That is until one of their targets – a douchebag senior who took advantage of a drunk underclassman during a house party, videotaped it on his phone, and posted it on YouTube – turns up dead, and DGM is implicated in the murder.
Now the girls don't know who to trust, and as their tenuous alliance begins to crumble, the secrets they've hidden for so long might be their ultimate undoing.

Doesn't it just sound wicked!? We're still a little too far out to have some pre-order links, but you should be sure to add this book to your Goodreads To Be Read Shelf by clicking here!

Oh, wait. You wan't to see the cover now don't you? Well. I guess its only fair.

Wait, I just realized something else! You may not even know who Gretchen McNeil is! Let me tell you all  about her!

Gretchen is a former coloratura soprano, the voice of Mary on G4's Code Monkeys and she currently sings with the LA-based circus troupe Cirque Berzerk. She is a founding member of vlog group the YARebels where she can be seen as "Monday," and she is an active member of both The Enchanted Inkpot, a group blog of YA and middle grade fantasy writers, and The Apocalypsies, a group blog of 2012 children's debut authors.

You can find Gretchen on TwitterFacebook, and on her blog.

Now that you know Gretchen, I suppose it's time to move on to the cover!
