Synopsis from Goodreads.com:

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister forces are massing beyond the kingdom's protective wall. To the south, the King's powers are failing, and his enemies are emerging from the shadows of the throne. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the frozen land they were born to. Now Lord Eddard Stark is reluctantly summoned to serve as the King's new Hand, an appointment that threatens to sunder not only his family but also the kingdom itself. A heroic fantasy of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and evildoers who come together in a time of grim omens. The first volume in George Martin's series.

Review after the jump.

Absolutely LOVED this book!!! In the beginning, it took a little while to take off (getting past character background mostly) but once it took off, WOW!! It could have gone all the way to the moon! Some people complained about how the book's chapters were from different characters' pov, because you had to follow multiple stories. I saw it as there were 2 main stories and the different characters gave you different views of the same story. I really liked this concept. It also gave you a deeper view of the characters, which I liked.

There were a lot of characters, however, with the same of similar names. But, it is set in a time of knights and lords who often name their children after friends or heros so I understand the use of the same name. In the beginning when the book is going over the background of the characters is when this is the most confusing. (Watching the HBO series Game of Thrones helped to separate out some of the characters. I personally used HBO's viewer's guide to see the characters and their houses and get them all straight. Helped a great deal.)

Overall, this was a great story!! The ending, although given away to me by a friend sadly, was still amazing! I kind of saw it coming (even before my friend gave it away) but I still didn't see how it happened! There are no true words to describe the ending besides epic!
