Waiting on Wednesday (#6)

(Brought to you by Breaking the Spine)

Author: Emma Mills
Goodreads Rating: 3.99
Pages: 272
Release Date: October 13th, 2015
Devon Tennyson wouldn't change a thing. She's happy watching Friday night games from the bleachers, silently crushing on best friend Cas, and blissfully ignoring the future after high school. But the universe has other plans. It delivers Devon's cousin Foster, an unrepentant social outlier with a surprising talent for football, and the obnoxiously superior and maddeningly attractive star running back, Ezra, right where she doesn't want them first into her P.E. class and then into every other aspect of her life.

Pride and Prejudice meets Friday Night Lights in this contemporary novel about falling in love with the unexpected boy, with a new brother, and with yourself.

Waiting on Wednesday #5

(Waiting on Wednesday brought to you by our friends at Breaking the Spine)

Author: Erin Bow
Goodreads Rating: 3.63
Pages: 384
Expected Publication: September 22, 2015
A world battered by climate shift and war turns to an ancient method of keeping peace: the exchange of hostages. The Children of Peace - sons and daughters of kings and presidents and generals - are raised together in small, isolated schools called Preceptures. There, they learn history and political theory, and are taught to gracefully accept what may well be their fate: to die if their countries declare war.

Greta Gustafsen Stuart, Duchess of Halifax and Crown Princess of the Pan-Polar Confederation, is the pride of the North American Precepture. Learned and disciplined, Greta is proud of her role in keeping the global peace, even though, with her country controlling two-thirds of the world’s most war-worthy resource — water — she has little chance of reaching adulthood alive.

Enter Elián Palnik, the Precepture’s newest hostage and biggest problem. Greta’s world begins to tilt the moment she sees Elián dragged into the school in chains. The Precepture’s insidious surveillance, its small punishments and rewards, can make no dent in Elián, who is not interested in dignity and tradition, and doesn’t even accept the right of the UN to keep hostages.

What will happen to Elián and Greta as their two nations inch closer to war?
Such a cool idea for a dystopian!!! Want the countries to stop waging war? Well hold all the leaders' children hostage with the threat that if a country goes to war, their children die! I reeeeeally love this idea if you can't tell :)

I'm hoping that it focuses on that plot line and doesn't have a huge focus on the possible romance between Greta and Elián. That's not to say I hope there isn't something there. I just want this to be more of kick-ass dystopian where you think you know what's coming but then all of a sudden....
and all you can do is say...
And it possibly haunts you for days...

Well if my excessive use of gifs doesn't tell you how much anticipation I have for this book, I don't know what will. I can't wait to get my hands on this to see if it lives up to my expectations ;)

Waiting on Wednesday #4

(Waiting on Wednesday brought to you by our friends at Breaking the Spine)

Author: Julie Murphy
Goodreads Rating: 4.17
Pages: 384
Expected Publication: September 15, 2015
Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked . . . until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back.

Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.

With starry Texas nights, red candy suckers, Dolly Parton songs, and a wildly unforgettable heroine— Dumplin’ is guaranteed to steal your heart.

I am so beyond excited for this! I heard many good things about the book and the author. I've recently been experimenting with more contemporary books and this one seems right up my alley.

First off, I have been struggling with my weight for a while. I'm the heaviest I have ever been since getting a full time career and I have been battling with my weight and self-image for years (as many girls/women have).

The main reason I want to read this is book is I have a feeling Will is going to be a big inspiration for me on how to love the skin I'm in and who I am. Not just for me, but for all women who don't feel beautiful. Break the standards of beauty! I'll be cheering for Will the whole way :)

I'm so excited to see what goes on with Celaena, Dorian, Chaol, Aedion and Rowan :) So many questions that need answering. Plus, the series is just amazing so there really isn't much else to say in regards to why I am waiting on pins and needles for this <3

Waiting On Wednesday #8?

I really need to go back and count these but I think this is the eighth WOW post I've done for the blog.

This week's Waiting on Wednesday is for a book that should actually be called MY FRACTURED FEELS instead of it's actual (and lovelier title) Their Fractured Light by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner.

There are INNUMERABLE reasons why I need this book in my hands yesterday.

1. THIS SERIES GIVES ME LIFE. Seriously.
2. Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner are narrative geniuses.
3. We get more TARVER MERENDSON.
4. Did you hear me? TARVER MERENDSON.
5. We finally get to see Corinth. Super excited about that.
6. Do we get to meet Daddy LaRoux?
7. We get to follow Sofia Quinn around? She's a BAMF and a lady and I'm dying to hear more of her story.
8. I really can't wait to meet Gideon, the computer hacker.
9. I hope there's a Lee and Flynn appearance.
10. The cover makes me want to dive in.
11. My heart needs to be put back together and broken again. Just like the stars were and the world was shattered and the light is fractured. We need to fix that.
12. I just need it. Please.
13. I need a good cry. A happy cry, a sad cry, a my-god-it's-so-beautiful-cry. Just gimme. I think this book will deliver.
14. I need to imagine Chris Pine as Tarver. (No seriously, it's a legit headcanon.)

HOWEVER, I never want this series to end so I will wait many wednesdays for this book. Because when I have it in my hands that means it's over. And it can't be over. This world is too fascinating, the characters too amazing, and the writing too captivating to leave behind.

Waiting on Wedneday #2

(Brought to you by our friends at Breaking the Spine)

Author: Betsy Cornwell
Goodreads Rating: 3.84
Pages: 304
Release Date: August 25, 2015
Nicolette’s awful stepsisters call her “Mechanica” to demean her, but the nickname fits: she learned to be an inventor at her mother’s knee. Her mom is gone now, though, and the Steps have turned her into a servant in her own home.

But on her sixteenth birthday, Nicolette discovers a secret workshop in the cellar and begins to dare to imagine a new life for herself. Could the mysterious books and tools hidden there—and the mechanical menagerie, led by a tiny metal horse named Jules—be the key to escaping her dreary existence? With a technological exposition and royal ball on the horizon, the timing might just be perfect for Nicolette to earn her freedom at last.

Gorgeous prose and themes of social justice and family shine in this richly imagined Cinderella retelling about an indomitable inventor who finds her prince . . . but realizes she doesn't want a fairy tale happy ending after all.

Waiting On Wednesday #6

Waiting On Wednesday #6

This week's Waiting On Wednesday comes from a place of desperation, longing and need.

I need THE WINNER'S KISS by Marie Rutkoski. Please and thank you.

March 1, 2016 is way too far away.

And some spoiler-y comments:

1. What do you think that Kestrel isn't holding the sword in this cover but almost shying away from it?
2. Does this mean she has to choose to act again or that someone else will act on her behalf?
3. Is there any meaning to the dress meaning crimson?
4. Why can't I have this book now?

Waiting on Wednesday #6

Waiting on Wednesday is brought to you by Breaking The Spine

This week I'm waiting for Emery Lord's WHEN WE COLLIDED.

Anyone who knows me should not be surprised by this--I'm absolutely in love with Emery Lord's books.

I had the honor of interning at Bloomsbury during OPEN ROAD SUMMER and THE START OF ME AND YOU and saw that many bloggers and reviewers agreed with me, Emery is fabulous.

Her stories are a mix of everything you love in a good book: sweet, moving, character driven and at times intense. Her writing is truthful and perfect.

In her post announcing WHEN WE COLLIDED, Emery writes that she wanted to write a book about mental illness that wasn't about mental illness and in an ever-growing, hopefully diverse YA canon, that's really what we need. I can't wait to read this story that Emery will no doubt handle with the grace and respect that all of her writing has had before her.

And THE COVER.

Can we talk about that too? Because it's so freaking gorgeous, just like Emery's writing. I expect nothing less.

Waiting On Wednesday (#5?)

Hi all! I've lost count of the number of Waiting on Wednesdays I've done. At this point, I know it's still in the single digits--which is extremely disingenuous of me, considering I'm constantly waiting for books. And not just on Wednesdays. But alas, I've only chronicled a few and I promise to be better with it.

This Wednesday, I'm waiting on...

THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE by Heidi Heilig
Expected publication: February 16, 2016

For obvious reasons but also because, in case you can't figure it out:

1. I follow Heidi on Twitter. She's lovely and it makes me want her book a million times more.
2. THE COVER. DUH.
3. The title. I'm a sucker for titles. I've often grumbled over bad titles. I almost didn't watch 'Revenge' because of it's super shitty title, which now I understand as being the only title it can have.
4. The character's name is pretty freaking cool. I also have a thing for character names. They can make or break a book, to be honest.
5. SHIPS.
6. A GUY GAMBLES AWAY HIS DAUGHTER'S EXISTENCE? HOW EPICALLY TRAGIC DOES THAT SOUND?
7. LOVE. TRAVEL. INTRIGUE. I need it now.

So,  what are you waiting for?

Waiting On Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a feature--hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine--where bloggers share what books are burning up their TBR list.

So, as everyone in the book world knows, last week was BEA.

Those lucky enough to attend were able to get an amazing list of titles, which I'm sure most of you have seen in BEA Haul pictures.

I was amazingly fortunate to get a lot of books that I wanted to get--and some that I didn't think I'd get near!

However, I missed out on a few! (Yes, I know...poor me!) But I figured this would be a perfect opportunity to write a quick post-BEA themed Waiting On Wednesday.

Here's a few titles I wanted to get but didn't at BEA.

1. This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp

This book has been on my radar for a while--and if it's not on yours, please redirect yourself to your TBR list and add this.

Just so you know, I'm expecting to cry through every page of this novel. And the cover? Is so chromatic and stunning.

2. Zeroes by Scott Westerfeld, Margo Lanagan, Deborah Biancotti

Who didn't want this novel? I actually haven't read anything by Mr. Westerfeld (Ducks and runs for cover) but this one looks especially epic. I want it. Now.

3. Until We Meet Again by Renee Collins

Every year, I make a BEA book list--I'm a horrible scheduler but I always manage to create a comprehensive list of books I MUST have. Until We Meet Again was top on that list. The concept is so me. It's a Brianna book and I missed it. Damn.

4. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Well, I kind of knew I wasn't going to get this one. I mean, I heard tell that the lines were utterly unmanageable. I figured I wouldn't be able to get it. Oh well. Something to look forward to!

5. Reawakened by Colleen Houck

Oh my. Okay, well, this book wasn't even on my radar until I came home from BEA and saw a few twitter posts about it. Guys, this book was made for me. I was obsessed with Egypt as a kid--The Mummy and The Mummy Returns played frequently on our TV screens. I need this. Tomorrow. Please?

6. The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness

Ugh, I cannot believe I missed this one. I'm pretty angry about it because again, it was one of my top BEA hopes. I mean, it sounds epic. So why didn't I epically grab it at BEA? #isuck

Waiting on Wednesday #3

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that highlights upcoming books we're waiting for.

~*~

This week I am so looking forward to RUBY ON THE OUTSIDE by Nora Raleigh Baskin.

Ruby’s mom is in prison, and to tell anyone the truth is to risk true friendship in this novel from the author of The Summer Before Boys that accurately and sensitively addresses a subject too often overlooked.
Eleven-year-old Ruby Danes is about to start middle school, and only her aunt knows her deepest, darkest, most secret secret: her mother is in prison.
Then Margalit Tipps moves into Ruby’s condo complex, and the two immediately hit it off. Ruby thinks she’s found her first true-blue friend—but can she tell Margalit the truth about her mom? Maybe not. Because it turns out that Margalit’s family history seems closely connected to the very event that put her mother in prison, and if Ruby comes clean, she could lose everything she cares about most.

Full disclosure: My dad is in prison. He's been for a while and will be for a while longer. When I was Ruby's age, I kept this secret close. It felt like holding my breath and knowing that soon, I would have to let go. I was lucky enough to have friends that understood and when I was ready to share, it didn't feel as awful. But for young children, it can be hard to open up. This is an issue with such stigmatization--from the media, society, our own governments--that a lot of people feel the need to stay quiet. I'm so glad that Nora is giving a voice to this issue and hopefully it is one of many to come.

Waiting on Wednesday #3 (It's been a while...)

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that highlights upcoming books readers are anticipating the most!

Guys, I feel like Waiting on Wednesday might as well be now titled Waiting on BEA because I have a feeling a chunk of my books will be there--hopefully!

This week I'm waiting on EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING by Nicola Yoon.

The book's vibrant cover and promising--and unique-- premise are giving me all the grabby hands. I've heard wonderful things about it so far and am so looking forward getting a copy.

What are you waiting on?

Waiting On Wednesday #3

Hosted by Jill, at Breaking The Spine, Waiting On Wednesday is a feature that highlights books we're all desperately anticipating.

My waiting on Wednesday pick is Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen.

Okay, so there are a lot of reasons I want to read this book.

I'll start from ridiculous reasons and work my way down to the more weighty ones:

1. The cover. Carousals are whimsical. Whimsical covers are perfect.
2. The buzz. This is a particularly buzzy book for the Spring. I want to see if it lives up to the hype.
3. Sarah Dessen. I mean, who doesn't want to read a Sarah Dessen book?
4. I need to give Dessen another chance. I've only read one and three quarters of her books but I have a whole collection.
5. It's about a topic that is--unfortunately-- painfully personal to me. Not many YA stories focus on incarcerated family members. And while her brother is in jail, not prison, I think it's an important topic to discuss. I think it needs to be written about more. But this is a start. So I want to see how Sarah Dessen writes about it.

What's your WOW? Do you want to read Saint Anything? Why?

Waiting On Wednesday #2

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that highlights upcoming books us bloggers are slightly desperate  super excited for.

This week's WOW is all about MOSQUITOLAND by David Arnold.

Poor David Arnold. I think the guy has gotten oh so sick of me mentioning how I need this book in my life right now. I think I post about it every day.

But basically, it's everything I ever wanted in a story wrapped up in a convenient bookish bow.  Road trip? Quirky characters? Self-discovery? Sign me up.

Waiting on Wednesday (#1)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Breaking the Spine.

THE WINNER'S CRIME  (The Winner's Trilogy Book #2) by Marie Rutkoski

(Link to Marissa Meyer's glorious twitter pic of the cover since it hasn't been truly revealed yet and I feel bad about borrowing it.)

Summary: Book two of the dazzling Winner's Trilogy is a fight to the death as Kestrel risks betrayal of country for love.

The engagement of Lady Kestrel to Valoria’s crown prince means one celebration after another. But to Kestrel it means living in a cage of her own making. As the wedding approaches, she aches to tell Arin the truth about her engagement…if she could only trust him. Yet can she even trust herself? For—unknown to Arin—Kestrel is becoming a skilled practitioner of deceit: an anonymous spy passing information to Herran, and close to uncovering a shocking secret.

As Arin enlists dangerous allies in the struggle to keep his country’s freedom, he can’t fight the suspicion that Kestrel knows more than she shows. In the end, it might not be a dagger in the dark that cuts him open, but the truth. And when that happens, Kestrel and Arin learn just how much their crimes will cost them.

-

The first book in this series blew me away. I NEED to find out what happens next. I need to sink into Marie Rutkoski's beautiful prose. And this book will probably be my WOW until March 2014 when it comes out.
